Forgiveness; A Proof Of Love

SUNDAY 02 FEBRUARY, 2025

TOPIC: FORGIVENESS; A PROOF OF LOVE

SCRIPTURE:  But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: Ephesians 4:15.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: You cannot claim to truly love if you are unwilling to forgive.

The Scripture clearly reveals that love is a spiritual virtue, a fruit of the Spirit.  Galatians 5:22 says, But the fruit of the Spirit is love. And like every fruit or planting, love has the capacity to grow (Jeremiah 12:2). Every spiritual grace is designed to increase and mature as 2Peter 3:18 exhorts us:
But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen.

Love exists in degrees, dimensions, and expressions. From Scripture, we see an example of love shown by Joseph towards his brothers. Despite being wronged by them even to the point of seeking to kill him, Joseph demonstrated an unusual kind of love and forgiveness towards them. When his brothers came to Egypt to buy grain during the famine, Joseph not only forgave them but also threw a feast in their honour. He asked them, “How many are you?”  They replied, “We are twelve brothers, but one has died.”  The one they thought had died was, in fact, standing before them—Joseph himself. When he revealed his identity to them, instead of seeking a revenge, he showed them love. Joseph celebrated with his brothers, forgave their betrayal, and even gave them the best land in Egypt. Joseph’s ability to fully forgive his brothers showed the maturity of love at work in his life.

One of the clearest proofs of genuine love is forgiveness. You cannot claim to truly love if you are unwilling to forgive. As Scripture says, “Love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8). Love forgives. True love grows to the point where it releases others from their wrongs and extends grace, just as Joseph did with his brothers. Beloved, make up your mind to love genuinely. Practice forgiveness.

Remember this: You cannot claim to truly love if you are unwilling to forgive.

ASSIGNMENT:

  1. Make up your mind to love genuinely from your heart and continue to grow in love.
  2. Practice the act of forgiveness.
