TOPIC: THE DANGERS OF LIVING ABOVE GODLY COUNSEL

 SCRIPTURE: Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety. Proverbs 11:14

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Existence above counsel is existence without safety.

Our anchor scripture reveals that the absence of godly counsel is a signal for danger. A person who hates godly counsel is either in a fallen state or awaiting the greatest fall of their life.

Beloved, godly counsel should not be disregarded, especially if it comes from someone who has your best interests at heart. If someone who hates you gives you advice, you can doubt it. If someone who wants your downfall gives you a piece of advice, you should be skeptical about it because he may be telling you to do what will destroy you.

David was wise enough to choose the option of falling into the Hands of God (2 Samuel 24:14; 1 Chronicles 21:13). But the entire calamity started because of David’s refusal to take a godly counsel (1 Chronicles 21:1-4).

Please note the following:

1. Existence above godly counsel is existence without safety.
   No one can be safe where godly counsel is avoided.
2. Godly counsel is key to Divine covering. God uses godly counsel to give you a protective cover for your life (1Chronicles 21:1–4, 7–13). There are many people in terrible marriages today that wouldn’t have entered such marriages had they received or heeded the right counsel.

Many years ago, a young man and his wife-to-be were in a courtship. They came to see me, but when I saw their interaction with each other, I asked the lady quietly, “Are you sure of this man? Please check very well.”

I observed a lot of disparities between them in many realms. While she had completed her university education and had a good job with a car, the man was still somewhere struggling in life. He had not even gone to a mid-level school. Added to the above was the fact that the man was very temperamental. Everything was unequal.

But you know what? She went and told the man that I said she should be careful with him. When I got to know, I said, “Alright, do what you want. I’m already married. I’m not looking for someone to marry. It is for your safety and future.”

So, they went ahead and got married. Not long after the marriage, the man started beating the hell out of this lady. The lady was working in an organization that sends their staff on foreign assignments. So, she was sent to a foreign country for a foreign assignment, and her husband also went with her. When they got there, the man started battering her as usual. On one of the occasions, he even stripped her naked. The beating continued until she had to be redeployed back to Nigeria. That marriage had no future. The lady was completely shattered and devastated. Eventually, they went their separate ways. What happened? Counsel was not heeded; it took only God to save her life.

Beloved, remember that in the multitude of counsellors, there is safety (Proverbs 11:14).

There is an adage in our place that says, “No matter how tall the okra plant is, the owner will bend it.” Another adage goes, “What an elder sees while sitting, a child cannot see it even if he climbs a storey building.” We have children these days who think they are wiser than their parents. No! calm down and take godly counsel for the safety of your life and destiny.

Remember This: Existence above counsel is existence without safety.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Identify areas of your life where you have ignored godly counsel and repent genuinely.
2. Make up your mind to always seek and follow godly counsel before making major decisions.
3. Ask God to surround you with wise and spiritual counsellors.

PRAYER: Lord, I ask for grace to value and receive godly counsel. Deliver me from pride and the spirit of self-dependence. Help me to heed wise instruction, Lord in Jesus’ Name.
