Character Is A Choice

TOPIC: CHARACTER IS A CHOICE

SCRIPTURE: But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.  DANIEL 1:8.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: It is quality decision that makes a person elevate principles above pleasure.

Our anchor scripture reveals that in a world of many popular but improper choices, it is still possible to make the right choice on how to live and end well in this life and in eternity. That was what Daniel did.

It is crucial to note that character is a choice. You can decide to live upright, and you can also decide to live recklessly. It is quality decision that makes a person elevate principles above pleasure. Even if something will give you pleasure, if it is contrary to principles, you must reject such pleasure.

Principle means “I won’t give or take bribes.” Principle means “My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and so I won’t defile it.” Character is the elevation of conviction above consensus. It is the elevation of conscience above convenience and consequence. Let your conscience be what is ruling you. When your conscience is clear towards God and man, you will not care about consequences. And when your conscience is maintained irrespective of consequences, that is character.

Character is a choice. Compromise is also a choice. Daniel chose not to defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat. You can choose to maintain your integrity and not defile your body, and you can also choose to defile your body as a single young man or woman. You can choose not to lie, and you can also choose to lie.

But as you make choices in life, remember that it is within your power to make choices, but it is not within your power to decide the consequences of your choice. So, choose wisely! For example, Samson chose to keep moving from one woman to another and ended as a disaster (Judges chapter 16).

Beloved, even if you had made a wrong choice before now, it is not too late to make amends. No matter how far you have gone in the wrong direction, a U-turn is possible. You can change that bad habit today. The truth is, what you don’t handle today will manhandle you tomorrow. What you don’t change today will challenge you tomorrow. What you don’t deal with will deal with you.

It is also important to note that whatever you are doing now will determine what you will become tomorrow. You are not a fornicator, but you like pornographic pictures and videos, it will predict what you will become tomorrow. With time, you will either turn out as a prostitute or someone who patronizes prostitutes. Your character predicts your future. You are not doing anything about your destiny until you are doing something about your character.

Beloved, character is a choice and the choice you make today will determine your destiny. So, always remember to choose wisely!

Remember this: It is quality decision that makes a person elevate principles above pleasure.

ASSIGNMENT(S):

1. Avoid the lifestyle of sin; surrender your life to Christ if you have not yet done that.
2. Ask God for the grace to live upright.
3. Avoid actions that attract destructive consequences in life.

PRAYER: Lord, draw me closer to you each day. Lead me away from things that keep me from You, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.
