SCRIPTURE: Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. Matthew 17:21.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The power of fasting is the amplification of desire, and the intensification of desperation which pulls God to act.
It has been established that fasting is a prayer booster. To fast is to be on the fast lane of life. Fasting amplifies the frequency, intensity or effect of a person’s prayer life.
Now, how does fasting amplify prayer?
Fasting intensifies desire and amplifies desperation.
Normal or ordinary prayer is good, but fasting makes prayer desperate; it intensifies desire and amplifies desperation. And God never turns His back on the desperate.
It has been confirmed that physical hunger, many times, triggers spiritual hunger. If you have ever done a lengthy fast, you would realise that the more you fast, the more desperate you get in the Spirit.
Psalms 63:1-3 says,
O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary. Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.
The dry and thirsty land described in the Scripture above is a fasting situation.
Many of us want certain things and we want God to do these things for us but we are not desperate enough. Many of the things we want, we can do without them. If they do not happen, it does not matter much to us. This is not so with the desperate man. He comes before God with an intense hunger, and because he is hungry, he gets filled (Matthew 5:6). So, one major impact of fasting is that it amplifies spiritual hunger.
When Jesus went up to heaven, the disciples locked themselves up in the upper room, praying and fasting with desperation and then, the heavens opened and the Holy Ghost came upon them. So, the power of fasting is the amplification of desire, and the intensification of desperation which pulls God to act.
Remember this: The power of fasting is the amplification of desire, the intensification of desperation which pulls God to act.
