AVOIDING THE PITFALLS OF REUBEN

SCRIPTURE: Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power: Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch. Genesis 49:3-4.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: When you see a person with a sense of the future, he disciplines himself to arrive at that future.

It has been established that nothing is possible until someone is responsible. Responsibility is key to possibility in life and destiny. When people are not responsible, they cannot see possibility in life.

We understand from Scripture that one of the pitfalls of Reuben was his lack of responsibility. Reuben lived a life of irresponsibility. This lifestyle of irresponsibility made him to sleep with his father’s wife. Reuben was not responsible.

In the same manner, it is irresponsible for a mature man already in his 40s to be carrying girls up and down. At this age, he is still living a reckless life instead of being settled in marriage. That is irresponsibility.

An irresponsible man has no voice. When Joseph’s brothers were selling Joseph out, Reuben, being the eldest son of Jacob, should have stopped them, but because he was irresponsible, he had no voice. He could not talk to his brothers to spare Joseph. He was the firstborn, but because he had no godly character, his destiny was limited.

Apart from his life of irresponsibility, another character flaw of Reuben was that he had no sense of destiny, no sense of the future.

Reuben could not see a future with his life. He did not see that Abraham gave “something” to Isaac; and Isaac gave “something” to Jacob. He did not think that it was possible for Jacob to give him the “something” that he (Jacob) collected from his father. He had no sense of the future.

When you see a person with a sense of the future, he disciplines himself to arrive at that future. People who see their future live right so they can arrive at that future. But people who are careless and blind about their future live recklessly without discipline. Vision imparts on you a sense of consecration discipline. Vision makes you live right.

May the Lord open your eyes to see your future so you can live right, in Jesus’ Name.
